The rains and lightning came today on the women’s quarterfinals at the Beijing Olympic soccer tournament and caused a long delay in the USA v Canada game. At the time of the delay the game was tied 1-1 on a first half goal by Angela Hucles in the 12th minute but Canada’s Christine Sinclair equalized 18 minutes later with a blast past U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo.
After the delay Canada scored to tie it and send it to overtime where the USA’s Natasha Kai scored to give the USA a 2-1 victory and a spot in the semis.
The match was then delayed for more than 1 hour, 30 minutes after heavy rain and lightning sent both sides off the field.
After a scoreless second 45 minutes the match went into overtime where Kai took a beautiful cross and headed in the winner.
In the other matches Brazil beat Norway 2-1, Germany beat Sweden 2-0, and Japan beat China 2-0. The semis will be played on Monday August 18th.
