The USA women just won the Olympic Gold Medal in soccer with a 1-0 victory over Brazil. Carli Lloyd scored an overtime goal in the 96th minute to power the USA win. In the frantic last minutes of the second overtime Brazil came at the USA defense over and over and just missed on several scoring chances.
In the end it was tears for Brazil and joy for the USA in this incredible hard fought championship match. Both teams gave everything they had in the match. Brazil showed great flair and created chances but each and every time the US defense had some sort of answer to the Brazil attack.
“I don’t think we ever doubted we would make it to this game. Our backs were against the wall and we had no choice but to fight. There are no stars on this team. There are 18 great team players on this team and we all fought hard to make this happen.” said Kate Markgraf after the victory.
Goal scorer Carli LLoyd said, “It was hard. It was a battle. It is not about my goal but every single person on this team.”
“I don’t understand why the ball wouldn’t go in,” Marta said. “In so many games before we were able to score easily, but today it wasn’t the case.”
“I’m more mad than sad,” Marta said. “Again we had a chance to win the gold and again we let it slip away. It’s hard to say why that keeps happening to us.”
“I have no idea why we can’t win a final,” said Marta, who
sobbed when she got her silver medal. “It’s something I’m gonna keep asking myself for a long time. You keep asking what you did wrong.”
